Burlingame Country Club is in the town of Hillsborough, which borders west San Mateo and the westside of Burlingame.

Coyote Point Recreation Area and the CuriOdyssey museum/zoo are at the top northern point of San Mateo. Poplar Creek Golf Course is along the Bay in San Mateo it was originally called San Mateo Municipal Golf Course. The public 18-hole course reopened in 2000 with its many new poplar trees and now averages over 70,000 rounds a year, making it one of the most popular golf courses in Northern California. Poplar Creek is home to the Robert O’Brien Junior Championship and the San Mateo County Championship, having such notable past winners as former PGA Tour Professional, Johnny Miller.

Further south is Harbor View Park and Seal Point. San Mateo High School and its Theater are also in the northeastern part of San Mateo.
