Lowrie named to first All-Star team

A’s second baseman Jed Lowrie was named as the injury replacement on Tuesday for Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres in the 2018 All-Star Game presented by Mastercard.

Torres, in his rookie season, is on the 10-day disabled list with a right hip strain. Lowrie will make his first All-Star appearance, joining reliever Blake Treinen in representing the Athletics on the American League All-Star squad.

The 34-year-old Lowrie is hitting .288/.358/.504 with an .863 OPS. His 16 home runs and 62 RBIs lead all AL second basemen, and he’s strung together 32 multihit games. Lowrie, in his fifth season for Oakland, is 27-for-82 (.329) with seven home runs, seven doubles and 20 RBIs over his past 22 games.

The 89th Midsummer Classic, at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., will be televised nationally by FOX Sports on Tuesday, July 17; in Canada by Rogers Sportsnet and RDS; and worldwide by partners in more than 180 countries. FOX Deportes will provide Spanish-language coverage in the United States, while ESPN Radio and ESPN Radio Deportes will provide exclusive national radio coverage of the All-Star Game.
